Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon. Wikipedia describes a slot canyon as "a long, narrow channel or drainageway with sheer rock walls that are typically eroded into either sandstone or other sedimentary rock." Antelope Canyon is such a place. From above you hardly notice there is a canyon at all. Unless you are close to it, you can hardly see it at all. But once you are down inside (which must be accomplished by ladder) the soft sandstone walls have been carved into stunning formations that are like nothing else anywhere. When I first posted some of these pictures on my Facebook page, many of the comments suggested that they didn't look real. but they are.

Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo Reservation in the city of Page in north central Arizona. Tribal law requires that entrance into the canyons requires a Navajo guide. There are many touring companies in page available to furnish such guides. There are six separate sections: Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon, Canyon X, Rattle Snake Canyon, Owl Canyon and Mountain Sheep Canyon. The first three are the most popular and the most easily accessible. These photos were taken in the Lower Antelope Canyon.

These photos were taken on October 4, 2014. I understand that the popularity of Antelope Canyon has increased greatly recently, and that tour must be booked far in advance. I booked mine two days before for $28 per person. Prices today are more than double that, and add to that the $8 per person cost of a Navajo Park Permit. Expect to pay about $100 per person (less for kids). But it is well worth it to see something so amazing and unique.

These photos were taken on October 4, 2014. I included the photo above (with my wife and me) to try to show perspective to the rock formations in the pictures below. I apologize that there are so few. I took hundreds, but lost them to a catastrophic hardware failure.
